MGS Composer Corrals Music Makers for Concert Uematsu, Hosoe, Sakimoto, Ito, Okubo, more pitching in. On July 7th, one of the largest gatherings of videogame composers will occur at the 2,500seat Studio Coast venue for EXTRA 2007, a concert being put on by game soundtrack publisher 5pb.inc. This comes as a collaboration between Masatoshi Nakamura and Norihiko Hibino (of Metal Gear fame, pictured to the right), and is a little different than most videogame music concerts held in Japan; it's not put on by a single publisher.

In Japan, videogame publishers and developers are usually the same group or company, and they aren't willing to collaborate with other companies to organize concerts except when there's a clear promotional vision in the event itself, said Hibino. What's unique with this event is there has never been so many great composers brought together over the boundaries of company benefit. And they're actually going to show up and play music on the stage, not just letting the orchestra play. It's just because they love to do it, and Nakamurasen's strong emotion to make this happen helps a lot.
The lineup for the show includes Hirokazu Tanaka (Dr. Mario), Shinji Hosoe (Ridge Racer), Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy XII), Vagrant Story), Kenji Ito (Super Smash Bros. Melee, Seiken Densetsu 4), Tamayo Kawamoto (Ghouls 'n Ghosts), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), Yuzo Koshiro (ActRaiser), Motoaki Furukawa (Gradius), Hiroshi Okubo (Ridge Racer), Kimitaka Matsumae (Beatmania), and H. (Sega composer team).
Of course, as Mr. Hibino discussed earlier, it wasn't easy to assemble such a group. Because this is not sponsored by any specific game marker, the budget is limited and we asked composers to understand this and share equipment. Also, the need to negotiate with publishers to get the rights to use the music and visuals from their games was very hard.
