I, like many others of the 80's vibe generation love the Metal Slug series and appreciate the fact that there is a lot more fluidity to them than a greased up pub crawl, but when I see things like this happen, namely single items from a series appearing on XBLA for 800 points, I feel more cheated than a soap opera WAG.... and here's why..
These games always seem to appear at the most advantageous timing suitable for the creators of the software, mainly said because about a year or so ago, people around the world were able to pick up the Metal Slug Anthology for less than £20 on the PS2 (a bit more if you were a a person of the Wii persuation).
In these compilations you had every Metal Slug ever released, including a fresh new 6th (well, 7th if you count X) game, with all the fresh and beautiful animation that you had come to expect from the franchise.
I cannot say anything bad about the games themselves, as they are as good a set of coin guzzlers as you're likely to see and deserve to be recognised as such, but if you consider not just the game, but the value for money, it begins to get a bit more difficult.
Spanner's review of the game is true and accurate, but I feel that if you take into consideration the items above, the score NEEDS to come down. It's a bit like having Missile Command and Asteroids on Live Arcade, but also owning a copy of the Atari Anthology compilation from a few years back. It still plays on a 360, but are you gonna pay less than a tenner for a whole stack of games or just one that has had a slight graphical tweak?
I WOULD say though that if you have NEVER played a Metal Slug game and you want to see what all the fuss is about, download it as soon as you can because you will without a doubt become an instant fan of the arcade side scroller (or ASS for short). It's also essential for fans that cannot get a hold of the Anthology for any of their home consoles, but if you can attain the shiny disk of SNK goodness to play in your abode, do it.... because 7 into 20 is a damn sight less than what MS want for just 1.
