All this pomp and spectacle is centered around drifting, and drifting is what the very core of J2: HIN is all about. We created a new profile, customized our avatar, and purchased a Toyota Celica for our first foray on the tracks. Controls and physics are typically what makes or breaks a racing game. J2: HIN isn't going after the Forza Motorsport 2 or Gran Tursimo crowd, but that doesn't mean the game is a fullon arcade style racer either.
Our first race in J2: HIN didn't go very well. We hit a lot of walls and placed dead last. This was a big change after the monthandahalf we spent kicking butt in Forza Motorsport 2. The steering felt very sensitive and we didn't quite have a grasp of the best way to initiate and sustain a controlled drift. We had similar problems when trying out the drift challenges where the goal is to reach a certain score through drifting. Sometimes we couldn't get the car to drift when we wanted to and other times the car started drifting on its own. We were clearly doing something wrong because there were other people at the event who were able to nail the drifting and make us look like chumps.
