Codemasters Online released Lord of the Rings Online expansion pack Mines of Moria on 18th November across Europe and North America.  Was this good or bad timing for the conflicted "WoW:Wrath of the Lich King" expansion also releasing the same day.   Probably not since LOTR fans are already established and require their own add-on so all in all, I think both make everyone happy.  The add-on hails the arrival of Kazad-dum, the dwarven kingdom set under the mountain where the big, fiery balrog lives.

More importantly, Mines of Moria increases the level cap by 10, adds two new classes, and offers up plenty of fresh monsters, quests, and shiny loot.

As the first thing you see, the box is very important. If you have read the white dwarf article about 'battling in the box', you might be suprised at the size of the box. It is the same size as it's 3 predecessors and the Blood Bowl box. It is the right shape, but a little more depth would be nice. A|part from that, you get aclear view of what the contens is, and it is generally a nice design.

The Models

The moria goblins are very familiar, because it is the same sprue as trhe fellowship of the ring one. The cave troll is nice, have the option of a spear or a hammer, but will probably need some green stuff work if you want to use it for anything more than lobbing around a games room. When I say green stuff work though, it is only filling - not a new head (the head is pretty good). On the fellowship sprue is a ring, slightly smaller that the ROTK one. The plastic fellowship itself is very nice, but plastic has it's limitations - the models are slightly worse than previous metal ones, although the poses are great. My personal favorite is Gimli, as I love the pose he's in.
I love the scenery, although it is slightly different from the publicity photo's and the pictures in the booklet. But it is amazing stuff, and well worth getting - especially the tomb itself.

The 'Whippy Sticks'

More commonly referred to as range rulers, these are terrible. Although I've always wanted some, they are blue (bad) and in centimeters. Any fan of the other gaming systems will know that inches are prefered. The whole of the booklet is in centimeters too, but anyone who has played before will be able to convert these.

The Starter booklet

Any people who read any 'battle games in middle earth' issues would know how over simplified the rules were in the first issues (but the goblins for 99p wern't bad!). It is the same case with this booklet. Some examples are 'only being able to shoot something if it is compleatly unobscured' and no special rules for heroes are used. This put's the fellowship at a huge dissadvantage - and no chance to try out gimli and legolas' amazing new rules. all in all, this booklet was a huge dissapointment, and I would only recommend it to compleate novices.

The Rule Book

Although slightly flimsy, it is not bad. It only contains stats from the films, so if you plan on playing with the new fellowship suplement, your stuffed. It will be useful for traveling, as the full rulebook is going to be hardback. The changes to the rules are nice, and make sure you check out Gimli and Legolas.

Conclusion

This box is worth it's price, and I would recommend it to anyone who is new to the game, or loves great miniatures. Although some aspects are lacking, all in all I'm glad I bought it. I just hope you have more luck than I did (I won 1 out of the 4 scenarios - against cloudwolf!).
