Narratively even more insane than its breakneck combat would have you believe, Bayonetta’s frankly baffling story leads to some of the most inane, immature yet somehow knowingly brilliant cut-scenes we’ve seen in some time. There’s an absolute unwillingness on the part of the game to take itself seriously, and in a game where you play a witch that kills angels with her hair, there’s no other way it could really be done. You’re invited to laugh along with it one moment, then be brutally punished for the slightest mistake once the action kicks off — it’s an odd blend indeed, but it’s one that works surprisingly well.

Ping-ponging from the sublime to the ridiculous with sass, style and a potty mouth, Bayonetta is a ten-hour journey into both the obscenely brilliant and the brilliantly obscene, but you’ll still be playing it for its wealth of extras long beyond that. If this genre has been done better, we’ve missed out on a classic somewhere along the line. And when the first game released in 2010 is already chucking its silly hat into the ring to be considered for Game Of The Year, you have to wonder whether the next 12 months of Modern Warfare-dodging triple-A titles will even give us a chance to make a dent in that ever-growing backlog...
