Was it difficult to incorporate multiple players into what is an essentially single-player. narrative experience?
JT: Well, it started with making sure that there were bridging elements. There’s a character named Augusts Sinclair, who was a smooth-talking, ultimately self-serving
entrepreneur, and is one of the player’s primary sticking characters in the single-player component, but also whose company frames the entire home plasmid trial fiction
that encompasses the multiplayer. In multiplayer you take on the role of a new splicer who is testing plasmids in the field that are not necessarily stable yet. The ADAM habit is fed while the player engages in the civil war. Beyond that there are story payloads that are delivered as part of multiplayer that overlap with the events of the first and second game. As a tertiary layer beneath all of that, the speech of each of the playable characters gives a unique perspective on Rapture. Through their combat voiceover and through diaries that are unique to those characters, you learn about their story in Rapture and how
they intersect with the BioShock timeline.

Why did you choose to omit the Pipe Mania mini- game when hacking?
JT: There were multiple reasons. The first was that we saw a fairly consistent node of feedback from BioShock that even those who enjoyed the mini-game became somewhat numb to it over time. Beyond that we were more interested in the feeling of simulated immediacy, where all of the primary mechanics lived in the simulation,
and never paused it, and could he performed on the fly while rockets fly over your head or you try not to get detected by a splicer. So this time the mini-game is challenging but doesn’t pause the simulation. You can also do it from a distance by firing darts that set up a signal between your hack tool and the machine.
