As the old saying goes, in life there's are only two constants: death and taxes. In the world of video games, you can add one more to the list: Dynasty Warriors. For more than a decade, Koei has been churning out new additions to its feudal hack-and-slash series. And for just as long, there have been die-hard fans just itching to get their hands on the games. Now, Koei is bringing the series proper to the current generation of consoles. But does this sixth iteration of the Dynasty Warriors franchise bring something new to the table or is the game just more of same?
Although Dynasty Warriors 6 is the first true addition to the franchise to appear on the Xbox 360, it's technically not the first time Koei has released a Dynasty Warriors game on the system. Both Dynasty Warriors Gundam and Warriors Orochi have used the Dynasty Warriors formula and gameplay mechanics prior to this. For Dynasty Warriors 6, however, Koei decided to go the extra mile and redesign the engine for use on the current generation of consoles. As a result, the game has a little more polish and a few more tricks up its sleeve than previous games. Of course, this is still Dynasty Warriors 6a series that has always seemed to stick by its tried-and-true formulaso if you're looking for some dramatic changes, your best bet is to keep on looking.
Hack-and-slash gameplay at its purest.
Let's face facts right up front: The Dynasty Warriors series has always been about button mashing in the purest sense. Broken down to its base components, every Dynasty Warriors game can be summed up as follows. Players choose a hero who then fights his way through thousands of opposing troops, defeating enemy leaders and gaining control of sections of the land. Slash here, stab there, toss in a special move here and there, wash, rinse and repeat. Admittedly, there's not a whole lot of depth to this sort of gameplay. It's been the case for every Dynasty Warriors game to date, and DW6 is no different. Still, despite Koei's reluctance to fudge with the series' core mechanics, there are still a few minor changes worth mentioning.
For starters, players can get a little more hands-on with their character's development. New skills and items help to tweak out how a character is played, letting the player adapt more or less to his style of play. Also new to the series is the "Renbu" attack system, which awards players for stringing together attacks without being hit in return. As the player defeats his enemies, the Renbu Gauge fills up and increases the character's rank. Higher ranks equal more powerful attacks, as well as the ability to access new moves. Keep killing enemies without getting hit in return, and the gauge fills up faster. Basically, it's a way to reward the player for a higher combo count, other than just getting the bragging rights to a 500-plus kill count.
