IGN: THQ's media event was an impressive showing for the company and also a resounding vote of confidence in one of THQ's stronger original franchises - Destroy All Humans. We were given a video demonstration of next-gen Crypto the alien wreaking 19 shades of havoc with some incredible new weapons. This time around, the game takes place in the funky, garish 1970s, with more than 5 different cities to obliterate, including a very cool looking Las Vegas level.
The actual engine isn't very far along yet; as such, most textures were temporary or very simplistic. Crypto himself looked pretty good - the sides of his ovular cranium now pulse and glow very slowly, hinting at his psychokinetic powers.
The dialogue is partially recorded and fans of the original games' voice actor (that includes this writer) can breathe easy. The dialogue is every bit as offensive and hilarious as past games.
We witnessed one encounter inside a Buddhist monastery with an Asian kung fu monk alien - which was the perfect encounter to demonstrate some of the more interesting powers at Crypto's disposal. The Anal Probe returns - this time, you can lock onto multiple targets at once, allowing you to unleash a torrent of ass-penetrating rounds that caused the poor monks to clutch helplessly at their posteriors before dying.
"Let's get leddy to lumble..." It's true - that's a line from the game. Of the new attacks, The Venus Human Trap (taken straight out of Little Shop of Horrors), uses its tendrils to sweep up humans and devour them as it sprouts from the ground and towers over everything around it.
The Black Hole is unsurprisingly, a black hole that sucks everything up that isn't firmly planted to the ground - cars, people, lamp poles, trash cans, incidental objects like benches and loose litter - and it does so with impressive panache, even at this early stage in development.
Possibly the most impressive visually was the new Tornado attack that actually summons an enormous funnel cloud that stretches down from the sky and sweeps through the streets wreaking all kinds of chaos. It's insane. Lightning cracks and flashes, things are going flying and getting sucked up.
Crypto's UFO gets a redesign too, as explained away by the developer. Apparently Crypto gets drunk and crashes his ride before getting a slick new craft to mangle. This is a good thing for players since, heck, it's super-awesome.
The new craft carves up the landscape leaving persistent damage on any surface that it blasts with its laser. We were shown footage of a giant smile getting carved into the side of a skyscraper and huge swathes getting carved across hillsides and through the streets.
An enormous laser is one thing, but a giant neutron ball-bomb-thing is something else entirely. We witnessed the charge-up and release of the bomb with insane consequences - the blast took out the equivalent of 4 city blocks in a spectacular explosion worthy of a Michael Bay movie.
While very early looking overall, Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon is already looking like a lot of fun to play. Keep your eyes peeled for fresh coverage shortly.
