BioShock is a very rare kind of game. In the London Review Of Books, John Lanchester cited BioShock as one of the only popular works in recent years to give Ayn Rand an intellectual drubbing, and the contradictions at its centre provoked Ubisoft’s Clint Hocking to coin the phrase ”ludonarrative dissonance” — now a mantra for every writer and designer interested in the relationship between gameplay and story.

Yet all that florid outpouring felt somehow appropriate — it felt earned. In comparison, try discussing Modern Warfare 2’s controversial airport massacre in a ludo-narrative context. It has only the pretence of substance, and any attempt to plumb the shallows only serves to highlight the gulf between Infinity Ward’s efforts to propel the medium into new territory and 2K Boston’s.
As tired as the debate may be, BioShock 2 has made genuine strides towards videogames becoming accepted as an art form. It was an experience that could be dissected, argued upon and respected as both an experiential and emotional journey, as well as one that asked significant questions about how and why exactly we play, while simultaneously stunning players with an original, multitayered narrative. Ultimately, BioShock 2 has become a yardstick by which lesser games are measured, and a reliable touchstone for any defence of the medium as a mature outlet for creative expression.
